Proverbs 18:21 tells us that death and life, blessing and cursing, are in the power of our tongue. It’s simple. You can have what you say. God has given man an ability to speak and with that ability comes great power and consequence. Jesus even stated that one day believers will be judged for every idle word that proceeds out of their mouths (Matthew 12:36).
You can not get away from the law of confession; whether you are born again or you are lost. Your life is attached to your words. If you speak negatively over your life, you will reap a negative harvest. If you speak the Word of God or as I like to say the Word of your covenant over your life, you will reap covenant blessings. Your life is in your mouth.
We can see this concept all through the Bible. Genesis chapter 1 describes an earth that is void and without form. Then God steps on the scene and things begin to change. As soon as God speaks, life and light begin to fill the Universe. Hebrews 11:3 declares that the world of Genesis chapter 1 was framed by the word of God. It is clear that God used His Word to form the Universe.
As beings created in His image, we have also been invested with the ability to frame our own worlds with the Word of God spoken by our lips. If you read the book of James in chapter 3, you will see that our tongues control the course of our life. Therefore we should be careful what we say because we will have what we say.
How To Speak To Your Mountain
“And Jesus answering saith unto them, ‘Have faith in God.For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.’” Mark 11:22-24
I remember the first time I ever read this passage of scripture. At the time, I faced an impossible situation in my life created by my own choices. I was facing life in prison on multiple narcotics trafficking charges. When I read these verses, I was sitting on a bunk in the county jail. All hope for me seemed lost at the time, but God had other plans.
I had been reading the Bible for several days at that time, but none of it stuck; until I read what Jesus had to say in this passage of Mark’s Gospel. Immediately, a light went on. I can still remember clearly to this day, looking out the window of that jail and seeing the Ouachita River that runs through my town. I opened my mouth and told those prison bars to be removed and to be cast into the Ouachita River.
Nothing happened in the natural realm, but something changed in my spirit man that day. God used that passage to teach me about faith and soon I was confessing what the Word said about my situation. For two and a half years of my imprisonment, whether in a county jail, federal prison, in the midst of danger and in every trial, I confessed my freedom bought for me through the blood of Jesus.
After two and a half years, the Word of the Lord came to pass and I was set free. I didn’t have to serve life in prison. My life was not over. Instead I was free. Along the way, I also learned God would heal my body, He would provide for my finances and He would restore the years that I let satan steal from me.
This victory came to pass in my life because I learned to put God’s Word on my lips and believe Him by faith to bring that Word to come to pass. Notice Jesus said that whosever should speak to the mountain and believe in his heart would come to pass; that he would have whatever he says. This statement tells us two things.
One that anyone can use this principle in their life. Jesus said whoever. I am a whoever. You are a whoever. God is no respecter of persons. What He will do for Jesus, He will do for you. What He will do for the disciples, He will do for you. You simply have to step out by faith and speak to the mountain in your life; no matter what it is. Whether you face a financial crisis, need healing in your body or need deliverance from depression there is a covenant promise from God to you; given to you so you can speak that promise with your mouth and see deliverance.
Secondly this passage teaches us that we have to believe that what we say will come to pass. God is not moved by need. He is moved by faith. In order to see the victory, we have to believe that God will honor His covenant promises.
How does belief come? By renewing our minds to the covenant promises found in God’s Word. As we read the Word of God and meditate upon it, faith will begin to rise in our hearts. The Bible teaches us that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). In order to believe, we must first hear.
Lastly, don’t give up. Once you make a decision to stand, stand until you see the receipt of what you are believing for. Every morning I would awake in that prison and thank God for my freedom. When anyone would say anything negative about my situation, I would declare that I did not receive those negative word. I constantly and steadfastly declared God’s covenant promises over my life until I saw them come to pass.
It has worked in other areas of my life also. A few years ago when doctors said that my wife and I could not have a child, I declared by faith that we were fruitful according to God’s promise in Deuteronomy 28:4. Every day, I would thank God for my daughter (I wanted a girl). I called her out by name. Lindsey and I had decided if it was a girl, her name was going to be Julia Anne, so I would thank God for my daughter Julia Anne.
God was true to His covenant promise and we became pregnant. When it came time to find out the sex of the baby, I already knew we were having a little girl. Sure enough, that is what we were blessed of God with. Today she is a beautiful toddler who brings us much joy.
Notice that every promise that I have received it fulfilled after a period of waiting. Mountains sometimes do remove immediately, but often they remove after a period of time. It is during this time of waiting that we are tempted to give up. During this time of waiting the situation can even get worse. The enemy knows we are standing by faith and will do everything he can do to stop us from seeing victory.
When this happens, its time to dig our heels in and stay strong in our fight of faith. If we will stand our ground and not give up, we will see victory.
